Great White Shark - Practice #19

Math Problem:

A hard-working 3rd grade student decided to run the track during recess. The track at his school is exactly shaped like a square. One side is 50 meters long.

    1. How long are each of the sides of the track?

    2. What is the perimeter of the track?

    3.  In the past he has run along one side, and stopped at 40 meters and then has cut a corner each time, what shape does that make? You may draw this if it helps.

    4.  His goal is to run the track 4 times. His recess is 20 minutes long. It takes him 6 minutes to run all of the track without cutting corners. It takes him 5 minutes to run the track if he does cut all of the corners. If he wants to reach his goal of running the track 4 times, should he run it all or cut corners?  Write the number problem.

     5. If he cuts corners, what shape do those cut corners make? Pretend you are in a plane and you are looking down. What do the corners look like?
