Healthy Kids #13

Today, you have no blog post assignment.

If you've kept busy, reading, writing, having fun with family and friends, eating healthy, getting daily rest, and exercising, then you made some great choices for yourself during your Spring Break!

I'm always proud of you, and I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning in the Quad.  Please bring any work you completed over the break.

Healthy Kids #12

Today's blog post uses your comprehension skills.  Comprehension describes what you understand when you read something.  Here is a paragraph about a college class.  Read the paragraph two times, then answer the comprehension questions.

The learning goal for this class is to show you how to use a camera to take clear and artistic photographs.  The things that you will take pictures of in this class are:  groups, children, nature, and five objects that are the color yellow.  Yellow is important because it is a primary color.  The class will meet 6 times.  The instructors are Laura Bemis and Dierdra Asay.  If you want to take this class enter 201311 on your sign up form.

1)  Does the paragraph state where the class will take place?

2)  Who are the instructors (teachers)?

3)  Why do the students have to take pictures of yellow objects?

4)  What is the class number?

5)  What is the learning goal for the class?

Healthy Kids #11

Today's blog post is about telling time.  You are expert time-tellers.  For this assignment you will need a blank piece of paper (not lined), scratch paper is even better.  Binder paper is okay.  Also, you need a pencil.  Now you are ready.

Please draw 5 analog clocks using your artistic skills.  Remember to draw a circle, then mark where all of the numbers on the clocks belong.  You may draw the circles free hand, or find a round object and trace around it.

Challenge #1:  write the numbers in Roman Numerals.

Challenge #2:  Use a compass if you have one to draw the circles.

Here are the times for your clocks:

1)  5:05

2)  Quarter past ten.

3)  Three thirty.

4)  Ten minutes to seven.

5)  Ten minutes past seven.

Bonus:  11:55

If you have been keeping up with the blogs, great job!  Two more blog posts to go, and then I will see you in the Quad Monday morning.  I wish you a lovely weekend.

Healthy Kids #10

Happy Thursday!  Remember to do your warm-ups, stretches, and healthy heart exercises!  Stay healthy!  Eat food that is good for your body and mind!

Directions:  Today is about writing lists.  Please write a list of things that you enjoy.  Remember, start with a sentence, then a colon, then the list.  Each thing that you list is followed by a punctuation mark called a comma.  The final thing that you list, must have the word "and" in front of it.  You know this!  If you are not sure, remember to get help from an older student or family member.

Here is are some examples:

These are the colors of the rainbow:  red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

These are my favorite animals:  deer, lions, elephants, dogs, hummingbirds, stingrays, and mosquitos.

These are acts of kindness:  smiles, hugs, high fives, hand shakes, head nods, and listening.

You may write ten lists if you like!  Keep each down to no more than 8 things.  Write neatly so I can see your fantastic lists!

After you have completed this writing assignment, then do some art!  Create a picture, painting, sketch, or collage of something in one of your lists!

Happy Spring Break!  Here is a photo taken two days ago.

Healthy Kids #8

Hello!  I hope you are enjoying your time with your family and friends!  Here is a fun and interesting assignment.

When we are at school we learn character traits.  The ones that we have talked about in school are:  responsibility, respect, justice, and fairness.  These character traits are always important wherever we are.

Please write the word, responsibility, from top to bottom on the left side of your page (see picture below).  Then use each letter to write a word that shows responsibility.  This will make an acrostic poem.  An example for the letter "r" might be "ready."  Someone who does their job on time, is "ready."  Have some fun with this and get some help from your family!

Healthy Kids #7

Today's Friday, and your blog assignment is a Quick Write.  Remember, a Quick Write is just a non-stop writing assignment.  First, find a way to time yourself for 10 minutes.  Then, get your paper and pencil ready.  That's all you need!

You do not write the question:  Here is the topic.  Please write non-stop for 10 minutes.  After you are finished, please check for Indentation, capitals, punctuation, neatness, and creativity.  You may also have a parent or family member correct your writing.

Is it better to have something old or something new?  Think about some examples like an old chair, and a new chair.  There are very old cars that are not made anymore.  Are newer ones better?  What about an old erasure and a new erasure.  Think of any kind of example to write about.  Remember the question:  Is it better to have something old or something new?

Happy writing!

Healthy Kids #5

One…. two…. three ….

If you have asthma, take it easy and just do everything slowly.  Have someone with you to watch.

Everyday should be a day for physical activity.  Warming up, stretching and moving is important for brain health!  When you exercise you move your blood throughout your body, and blood carries oxygen.  Does your brain need oxygen?   YES!  So take a slow deep healthy breath and breathe out----get ready to move.  Yay!

You do not need to go outside for exercise.  You just need a little space, comfortable clothes, and maybe a buddy to help motivate you.  Of course, you can go out if you want.

1)  Remember start with a short warm up, running in place, jumping jacks, opposite toe touches.  This is not too fast, just to warm yourself up.

2)  Deep stretching and balance means you are pushing up to the sky.  Come down softly always.  Never bounce.  Hold each stretch and balance for 8 or 10 seconds.  Remember don't overstretch.  Balance, lift one leg up at a time, and count, then release.

3)  Heart health means moving fast, like speed walking, running, swimming, bicycling.  You can run in place, do jumping jack, and pretend jumprope at home.  You don't have to have anything fancy to exercise!

It's very important that you don't go too fast.  Just make sure you take good care, and you are not breathing too hard.  Add a little more each day.

If you have asthma, take it easy and just do everything slowly, and have someone with you to watch.

Get motivated!

Healthy Kids #4

Happy Tuesday!

A kind neighbor donated 15 boxes of tissues to our class!  Excellent!

Let's figure out how many total tissues we received.

Here is the word problem:
There are 5 boxes that have 100 tissues.  Also, there are 10 boxes that have 200 tissues.  How many tissues are there total?

Hint:  Use the CUBES strategy, and you might need to make more than one number sentence.  Take your time, and see if you can come up with more than one strategy!

Bonus:  If there are 25 people in the class (including the teacher), how many tissues could we each use?

Healthy Kids #3

In this assignment you will read a passage and answer comprehension questions.  Comprehension shows "what you understand from the reading"  This is a very important skill that will help you succeed in all of your studies.

Here is the passage.  It is straight from the 3rd grade science book.

Each day the Moon seems to change shape.  Sometimes you can only see a small part of the Moon.  At other times it is a big bright circle.  Still other times you cannot see it at all.  Each shape that we see is called a phase.  Scientists have names for each phase of the Moon.  There are eight phases.

Question:  How does the Moon seem to change shape?
Answer:  The Moon seems to change shape in the following ways:  ______________________

Question:  What is each shape of the Moon called?
Answer:  Each shape of the Moon is called a __________________.

Question:  How many phases does the Moon have?
Answer:  The moon has _______________________ phases.

During this Spring Break, please go out daily with a family member and draw what the Moon looks like.  Create a Moon Journal with the date, time, one sentence description and picture.

(The passage was taken from the Macmillan Publishing Company text book)

Healthy Kids #2

Hello!

Today's assignment is a math review of counting money.

1)  How can you use coins and paper dollars to make $1.42?  Please write down 5 ways.  Remember, $1.00 can be made with coins.

2)  Josie wanted to have a barbecue with her friends during Spring Break.  Her mother said yes, only if Josie would use her savings to pay for the drinks.  They went shopping and bought a barbecue grill for $149, food for $102, and drinks.  The total price was $265.  How much did Josie have to pay for the drinks?

3)  Tomato plants are on sale at the store.  You can purchase 5 tomato plants for $10.00.  How much is each tomato plant?

4)  To send a regular size letter anywhere in the United States, you have to put a stamp on the outside of the envelope.  Each stamp costs 49 cents.  If Josie wanted to invite 10 of her cousins to the barbecue, how much money would it cost to mail those invitations?

5)  Popcorn kernels were on sale for $6.00 a bag.  With all of the kernels, the teacher could have 6 popcorn parties.  How much did the popcorn kernels cost for each party?

Bonus:  The girl wants to buy a gift for her dad, which costs a total of $12.32.  If she only had $5, how much more money does she need to buy the gift.

Please continue to check back for blog assignments.  Take your time and do as much as you can.  I hope you are happily enjoying Spring Break!  Ms. Bhopla
