Guitar #2

The purpose of this assignment is for you to review how sentences are put together in sequence.  Look for clues like dates, details that go in order, or events in life that must happen one after another.  Below is part of a biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Please read the below sentences.  Then decide in what order they must go. When you have the order, please write the sentences in a paragraph with lovely, neat handwriting.  Remember your rules for writing: indentation, capitals, punctuation, good grammar.  Also, you may add time order words.
  • After college he studied for three years in theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.
  • His theological study led him to be elected president of a predominantly white senior class.
  • He and his wife, Coretta, had two sons and two daughters.
  • He was awarded the B.D. in 1951.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin.
  • He then completed his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and received the degree in 1955.
  • Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen.
  • In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of intellect and artistic abilities.
  • He received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College.

Guitar #1

In today's assignment, you are going to show me that you can add details to a very boring sentence.  Read the example below, and see how each sentence gets better and better.

Sentence 1 (very boring):  We are going to the store.

Sentence 2 (better):  My mom and I are going to the grocery store.

Ask yourself the following questions:  Why?  Where?  How?  When?  Who?

Sentence 2 already answers "who?"  The who, is your mom and you.

Sentence 3 (improved):  My mom and I are going to Safeway on 24th Street to buy some spices for our dinner.

Sentence 4 (awesome):  At 3:00 p.m. my mom and I are taking the car to Safeway on 24th Street to buy some spices for our dinner.

Sentence 5 (outstanding): At 3:00 p.m. my mom and I are taking the small silver car to Safeway on 24th Street to purchase some fresh coriander, black pepper, and all-spice for tonight's family dinner.

Your assignment is to improve each of the below sentences with details.  Write an improved sentence, then go back and add more, just like I did above.  Please proofread.

1)  The siblings played a game.

2)  A tiger walked to a cave.

3)  They are on the ride.

Zebra #8

Dear Students,

Wow, it's been a marvelous break!  If you have been keeping up with all of the blog posts, you are a remarkable and hard working student.  Remember, some students don't have access to the internet, so please appreciate what you have.

First, let's get ready for the next week.  That means, be sure to put your blog assignments, and packets (if you got one), in your backpacks.  Make sure your backpacks are filled with your study tools, like pencils, erasers, paper, binders, folders.

I will meet you where we line up in the morning.  I expect a P-E-R-F-E-C-T line.  I know you can do it!  Remind your classmates to please line up properly.  That means one person after the next.

Okay.  The following is your last blog assignment for this break.

SWBAT write clearly about a topic.

Lesson:  Please write a paragraph on one of the topics below.  It has to have all of the organizational elements:  topic sentence, three supporting details, and a conclusion.  You may write more than five sentence.  You may also write on more than one topic.

Topic #1:  Imagine that you found a little door in the back of your closet.  What might be behind it?  Please use some creative thoughts.

Topic #2:  If you could paint a mural on your bedroom wall, what would it show?

Topic #3:  Imagine a time machine that can take you to any time and place.  The rule is, you can try it just once.  Will you use it?  How?  Where would you go?

Zebra #7

It's Saturday!  Almost time to think about returning to school.

SWBAT make contractions out of two words and an apostrophe.

Lesson:  To contract, means to make smaller.  Water contracts when it turns to ice, it becomes smaller in volume.  The same thing happens to words.  When we want to shorten our sentences, we can squash two words together.

Example:  "they are" can be changed to "they're"   The letter a is taken out, and in its place, there is an apostrophe that looks like a comma, but is high up.

Assignment:  Please rewrite these paragraphs with the contraction made from the underlined words.

It is _______early morning, but Akili and I are not ___________asleep.  We are ________in the kitchen, and we do not ______________want to make any noise because we are ___________cooking a surprise breakfast for our parents.

I cannot ____________ reach the pan to cook the eggs,"  Akili whispered.  "It is ____________way up top of the refrigerator."

Zebra #6

We are nearing the end of the week, so that means just a few more days and we'll be back to school.  If you are working on your packets, please keep all of your work together, and bring them back in those same yellow envelopes.  Also, please bring your blog work!

Do the best you can, and get help from family and siblings when possible.

The assignment for today:

SWBAT (Student will be able to) read the following word problems, show work by drawing diagrams or pictures, and solve.  The lesson will be on fractions.

Lesson:  Remember, if you have two fractions with different denominators, you cannot make a comparison.  You have to change the fractions into equivalent fractions.  Example:  2/5  and 5/10.  When you change 2/5 to 4/10, then you can say that they are not equal.

Assignment:  Please complete the following problems with your understanding of fractions.

1)  Martin made two loaves of pumpkin bread the same size.  He cut one into 12 equal slices.  The other was cut into 16 equal slices.  Which slices were larger?

2) A pumpkin bread recipe needs 3/4 cup of apple sauce.  Martin has 5/8 of a cup of sauce.  Does he have enough?

3)  What is the numerator, and what is the denominator in:  5/7 ?

4)  True or False?  When the numerator in a fraction is 1, the fraction is in the simplest form.  Give an example.

5)  True or False?  When the numerator is not 1, the fraction is not in the simplest form.  Give and example.

6)  Write each of these three fractions in simplest form:  4/8,  16/24,  12/48.

7) Patricia has 11 pencils that she wants to share with her friends.  Can she give the same number of pencils to each of her friends?  Provide examples with your answer.

Yes! You made it!  Just two more days, and then you would have completed all of your Holiday Blog assignments.  Be proud of yourself!

Ms. Bhopla.

Zebra #5

SWBAT (Student will be able to) change words ending in -y to words with -ier and -iest.  The words will change meaning and show comparison.

Lesson:  When you have a word like "happy," you can compare things by dropping the -y and adding -ier.  This would change the word to happier.  This means more happy.  Also, if you change the -y to -iest, then you would have happiest.  This changes the meaning of the word to most happy.

Example:  happy, happier, happiest

Please change the following words by changing the endings.

1) dizzy
2) heavy
3) hungry
4) pretty
5) drowsy

Now, please use the new words in sentences.  You should have 10 sentences total.

Example:

The girl was happier in her new school because she made new friends.

The child was the happiest boy in the class when his name was picked for a raffle.

Zebra #4

SWBAT use the homophones their, there, and they're correctly.

Lesson:  In this short assignment, you will be practicing the use of theirthere, and they're.

Their - when something belongs to many people, it is theirs.

There - if we are going somewhere, we are going there. This word tells us where something is.

They're - stands for they are. It is a contraction. Two words put together with an apostrophe made they're

Please rewrite the whole sentence with the correct word.  Pick from their, there, or they're.

1) __________ were many birds at the zoo.

2) The teacher told the students to put ____________ backpacks on the back of their chairs.

3) The boy and girl raised ____________ hands at the same time.

4) Please put the spelling assignment ______________, and I will look at it later.

5) Olympians are ultimate athletes. ____________ known for being champions.

6) ___________________ hands were dirty from playing in the sand.

7) At the dog park, we saw many owners playing with ______________ dogs.

8) Which one of the words is a contraction? _______________________.

9) Please write three sentences, each using their, there or they're.

Good job students!  You are doing great!  I'm excited for your progress.  Keep it up!

This is a spelling activity.

1)  Please write these words three times each.  Use printing.  Use only a pencil.  Neatness counts.

2)  Find each word in the dictionary (it doesn't matter which dictionary).  Then, write the word that comes before it, and the word that comes after it.

ß----------------------------------------------------------------------------à

        0                                                                                            1

The zero represents impossible.  The one represents certain.

For numbers 7 - 11, draw a line graph, then place a dot where you think the probability is represented.

Example:

Ms. Bhopla will drink tea at least once today.

ß----------------------------------------------------------------------------à

        0                                                                                            1

Notice that the dot is not exactly on 1.  We can never be sure that she will drink tea.  However, it is very likely.
