Panda #5

Please always write the title of your assignment at the beginning.

Irregular Verbs (Grammar)

This assignment helps you practice past tense of verbs.  These are special verbs called irregular verbs.  Irregular verbs are not regular.  You do not add -ed to the end of the root word to make it past tense.

Examples:

The present tense is bring.  When you change it to past, it becomes brought.
The present tense is fight.  When you change it to past, it becomes fought.

Please find the past tense of the word, or the present tense of the word.  I  need to see both words.  Example:  bring/brought -- write the present tense first, then the past tense next.

1)  choose

2)  found

3)  write

4)  flew

5)  catch

6)  make

7)  rang

8)  sleep

9)  teach

10)  brought

11)  drew

12)  buy

The two poems below use rhyming words.  Notice that some rhyming words have the same endings.  Some of them don't have the same endings.  Write the words that rhyme.  Remember, they just have to SOUND the same.

My Vegetables Are My Enemies
By Elizabeth Bushey

My vegetables are my enemies
My mom tries very hard to please.

A carrot in a sword fight can’t be beat.
A carrot on my plate I cannot eat.

Peas, a game of marbles I can do.
Peas with melted butter taste like goo.

Don’t even put a radish next to me.
My mother makes them roses, pointlessly.

Turnips, I can’t say I understand.
Don’t even bother opening the can.

Brussel sprouts are agony.
Broccoli is mean to me.

She’s tried them alphabetically.
And none of them appealed to me.

I can’t imagine Mom could ever bring
A single green or growing thing –

– But wait – of all the things I’ve had,
Zucchini isn’t all that bad.

Chameleon,
Come Talk To Me

Chameleon,
come talk to me.
Why do you change
So frequently?
Why can’t you stick
To brown or green?
Why would you wish
To be unseen?

With all those colors
Glorious
You’re really quite
Notorious
So scrumptious in
Those leafy trees
Foiling predators
Like me.

Here are 4 short poems from Kahlil Gibran:

It is wiser for the lame not to break his crutches upon the head of his enemy.

We are all prisoners but some of us are in cells with windows.

Sadness is but a wall between two gardens.

Give me an ear and I will give you a voice.

Directions:  1)  Read the short poem  2)  Write 3 sentences or more about what you think it means.  3) you may get help.

Example: Give me an ear and I will give you a voice.

This poem is about how two people can show each other care. It means that being a good listener is important. If someone gives me their ear, that means that they are listening to me. If they listen, then I will talk. Without their ear, I would not want to say anything to them. In the end, it's a great thing to be kind and listen. It shows that you respect the person who is talking.
