In this assignment you will continue practicing learning about poems and what they mean. Please write about your feelings, your thoughts, and what you think the author is trying to write about in the poem.  Write at least one half of a page.  Include the title and the author at the top of the page.

Kindness
Six days till Solstice, and in the news there is nothing about kindness;
The war machinery grinds away, lives in the balance teeter and shake,
And far away the soft river sand shifts under the weight of my hooves.

Ghandi walked forever and a day for salt; well, salt, yes, but something
Else, a lesson about kindness that danced over the heads of most,
The dry-haired masses only gathered to call out, 'More! More! '

My cat killed many mice, it's true, but some she let go, ignored, just
Watched while they escaped like the flatulence of the terrified. She could
Easily have slain them all; perhaps she was just exercising some kindness.

My father-in-law is 103. At dinner, his hand shaking, he will reach across
The table with trembling chopsticks to pass someone a tidbit, tasty,
Something he knows is wonderful and gives away out of kindness.

Who are you now, James? Where are the dreams of so many years ago?
At Solstice the world changes; Summer, and the Sun grows weaker, more so

Everyday, and slowly the air cools in the wake of the Sun's kindness.

Please write what you think this poem means.  Mention the title.  Why do you think the author writes that the winds "say" something?  In real life, the wind cannot speak.  What are your thoughts about the wind managing to speak?

WHAT THE WIND SAIDThe delta winds blows up the Sacramento River,
taking the edge off of the summer heat.
This wind makes the tree tops dance,
and it tells us this, "This life isn't everything.
There is more, just beyond the sky."

DRAFT#1 13JUNE

Here is another poem by Mr. Jobe.  Please read it, and write what you think the poem is about, and why he uses different words and phrases to describe the mood of the poem.  Is the mood sad?  Is the mood angry?  Is the mood happy?  What is the mood?

TRAVELERS, WALKING

We are travelers, walking
A long road to the full moon.
We can't see ahead
And we won't look behind.
Stupidity is both binding
And blinding.
We are travelers, walking
Until we are weary,
Searching for the light.
We might call it moonlight,
But really it is our own salvation
That we seek.
