Panda #16

If you don't understand a word in any of the Blog directions, please use your dictionary!

This assignment will give you practice with contractions.  Remember, the word contract means become smaller.  So, in grammar, when we take two words, combine them, take out a letter or more, and add an apostrophe, the result is a contraction.

Directions:

1) Please write the words and the contraction.
 
2)  Write one sentence using the original two words.
 
3)  Write the second sentence with the contraction.

Here are some study questions for the story, What Ever Happened to the Baxter Place?  Use your book to look up the answers.  You don't have to write them, just review them.

1)  What is this story mostly about?

2)  What was the Baxter Place made of in the beginning of the story?

3)  What did the Homestead Realty Company do with the land?

4)  What did Jess Hammil do with the land?  First he________ then he_____________.

5)  George Stillwell rented land from the Baxters.  What happened to it?

6)  We find out that it is a little sad at the end of the story.  Why can't people say what happened to the Baxter Place?  What had happened to it?

Panda #15

This assignment is an essay writing assignment.  You will be given a writing prompt.  You will write 5 complete paragraphs, with at least 5 sentences each.  This means that you will have 25 sentences total.  You must always indent all of you paragraphs.

Writing prompt:  Think of a time when you wanted to give up, but you kept going.  Try to remember what that felt like.  Please write a motivating/inspiring sentence as your topic sentence.  An example would be:  Nothing is hard, if you believe in yourself.  Don't use this sentence, you must come up with your own.

Paragraph #1:  Topic sentence, and Introduction Paragraph.  It must contain the main ideas that you are going to write about in the rest of the essay.

Paragraph #2:  This must contain your first supporting detail and examples.

Paragraph #3 and #4:  Supporting details and examples.

Paragraph #5:  Conclusion with your final sentence that summarized the whole essay and tells your reader your final thoughts.

Please write as many drafts as possible, and use separate sheets of paper.  Check spelling, grammar, punctuation, neatness, organization of sentences and paragraphs.  Please save all of your drafts and staple them to the back of your final draft.

Assignment:  Please alphabetize this list of 30 nouns.

Strategy:  Cut blank paper into 30 rectangles, write the nouns on the rectangles, then move them around to figure out the alphabetical order.  Or, you may also use index cards cut into half.  Once you have the right order, then copy the list down onto a piece of paper.  Please pay attention to spelling and penmanship.  Neatness counts.
