Guitar #2

The purpose of this assignment is for you to review how sentences are put together in sequence.  Look for clues like dates, details that go in order, or events in life that must happen one after another.  Below is part of a biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Please read the below sentences.  Then decide in what order they must go. When you have the order, please write the sentences in a paragraph with lovely, neat handwriting.  Remember your rules for writing: indentation, capitals, punctuation, good grammar.  Also, you may add time order words.
  • After college he studied for three years in theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.
  • His theological study led him to be elected president of a predominantly white senior class.
  • He and his wife, Coretta, had two sons and two daughters.
  • He was awarded the B.D. in 1951.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin.
  • He then completed his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and received the degree in 1955.
  • Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen.
  • In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of intellect and artistic abilities.
  • He received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College.

Guitar #1

In today's assignment, you are going to show me that you can add details to a very boring sentence.  Read the example below, and see how each sentence gets better and better.

Sentence 1 (very boring):  We are going to the store.

Sentence 2 (better):  My mom and I are going to the grocery store.

Ask yourself the following questions:  Why?  Where?  How?  When?  Who?

Sentence 2 already answers "who?"  The who, is your mom and you.

Sentence 3 (improved):  My mom and I are going to Safeway on 24th Street to buy some spices for our dinner.

Sentence 4 (awesome):  At 3:00 p.m. my mom and I are taking the car to Safeway on 24th Street to buy some spices for our dinner.

Sentence 5 (outstanding): At 3:00 p.m. my mom and I are taking the small silver car to Safeway on 24th Street to purchase some fresh coriander, black pepper, and all-spice for tonight's family dinner.

Your assignment is to improve each of the below sentences with details.  Write an improved sentence, then go back and add more, just like I did above.  Please proofread.

1)  The siblings played a game.

2)  A tiger walked to a cave.

3)  They are on the ride.

Zebra #8

Dear Students,

Wow, it's been a marvelous break!  If you have been keeping up with all of the blog posts, you are a remarkable and hard working student.  Remember, some students don't have access to the internet, so please appreciate what you have.

First, let's get ready for the next week.  That means, be sure to put your blog assignments, and packets (if you got one), in your backpacks.  Make sure your backpacks are filled with your study tools, like pencils, erasers, paper, binders, folders.

I will meet you where we line up in the morning.  I expect a P-E-R-F-E-C-T line.  I know you can do it!  Remind your classmates to please line up properly.  That means one person after the next.

Okay.  The following is your last blog assignment for this break.

SWBAT write clearly about a topic.

Lesson:  Please write a paragraph on one of the topics below.  It has to have all of the organizational elements:  topic sentence, three supporting details, and a conclusion.  You may write more than five sentence.  You may also write on more than one topic.

Topic #1:  Imagine that you found a little door in the back of your closet.  What might be behind it?  Please use some creative thoughts.

Topic #2:  If you could paint a mural on your bedroom wall, what would it show?

Topic #3:  Imagine a time machine that can take you to any time and place.  The rule is, you can try it just once.  Will you use it?  How?  Where would you go?
